Under the Covers: #613 SUMMER INTERLUDE / #614 SUMMER WITH MONIKA
okay, so first things first: this particularly fetishistic segment of the blog will no longer be called “Up Close & Personal,” because that title was exceptionally stupid. it will now be called “Under the Covers” because that’s literally what this is, and also it makes you think of sex. which reminds me of a famous Ingmar Bergman quote: “always make them think of sex.”
anyway, next week Criterion is set to release two of Ingmar Bergman’s most lustful and bucolic films, a nice change of pace for the cinema’s great “Heir of Despair” (note: no one actually calls him that). if both are considered to be minor Bergman, it’s only because of their comparative levity and breeziness, and each film is quite deserving of greater recognition. Criterion has packaged them as aesthetically twinned releases, with simple and handsome designs, and the Summer with Monika disc is absolutely loaded with goodies. check it out.
Criterion’s editions of Summer With Monika and Summer Interlude will hit stores on May 29, 2012.
Wes Anderson Posters by Sam Smith
“I’m going to find it and I’m going to destroy it. I don’t know how yet. Possibly with dynamite.”
Criterion graphic designer / Ben Folds drummer / man about town Sam Smith has been commissioned by Spoke Art and San Francisco’s Castro Theatre to create posters for the films of Wes Anderson because… uh… why not? i’m sure there’s a reason (a retro, Moonrise Kingdom, a retro inspired by Moonrise Kingdom, whatev), but that’s not important right now. what *is* important is that i just stare at these for a few minutes and let all of my worldly cares drift away… yeah… that’s the ticket.
here’s hoping that Smith will complete the set (and by “complete the set” i mean “do Fantastic Mr. Fox”).
be sure to visit Sam Smith’s site and check out all of his great work.

One Last WINGS OF DESIRE Poster From The Silver Screen Society
Designed By: Victoria Fernandez
and so, a month of gorgeous posters celebrating Wim Wenders’ immortal film comes to a close. this Victoria Fernandez design was actually one of the first to appear in The Silver Screen Society’s Wings of Desire showcase when it began at the beginning of April, but i felt like saving it because — technically speaking — it is totally sweet.
looking forward to seeing what movie TSSS is gonna devote their talents towards in May!
WINGS OF DESIRE
Designed by The Silver Screen Society
even more incredible Wings of Desire posters from the collective over at The Silver Screen Society, as their month devoted to the film rages on. in a related story, it’s total bullshit that April only has 30 days.
Clockwise from upper-left:

“I can’t see ya, but I know you’re here. I can feel it.”
it’s Wings of Desire month over at The Silver Screen Society, which means that it’s The Silver Screen Society month here at Criterion Corner. TSSS is a collective of hyper-talented graphic designers who pick a movie each month and create as many pieces of art in tribute to that film as they can before the calendar rolls over, and this April they’ve set their sights on Wim Wenders’ woozily transcendent Wings of Desire. and shockingly (read: “not shockingly”), the results are great. like, really really great. like, teenage mutant ninja turtle ice cream popsicle great.
visit The Silver Screen Society to see what they’ve posted so far (as if i’m not just gonna devote a post to each one and drag this out for as long as possible), and brace for what promises to be the most beautiful April in recent memory.
THE POSTERS FOR ROBERT BRESSON
this assembly of these remarkable (and remarkably varied) posters is the good work of the great Adrian Curry, and you should really just hop on over to mubi.com to read his original post on the matter.
as for me, i need to go occupy Film Forum for the 2-week Bresson retrospective that’s already up and running. Although if I miss A MAN ESCAPED on the big screen, at least i might get a chance to check it out on Blu-ray later this year…
4 Portraits By David Downtown
david downtown is not a name with which i was familiar before Criterion decided to use his portrait of Catherine Deneuve as the cover for their forthcoming BELLE DE JOUR disc, but methinks i’m something of a fan. i say “something” of a fan, because i’m not sure i’m able to fully appreciate the brunt of Downtown’s work… the dude is famous for the illustrations he contributes to Vogue, the efficacy of which is often determined by how they can hock fashion, and i’m typing this from the inside of an overlarge New York Rangers sweatshirt. but i really dig his portraits, the soft wide strokes and the blown-out exuberance that so often seems to anchor them down. and yet, looking at the Deneuve job above, the whole thing feels just a half-step removed from some sort of post-apocalyptic, Jubilee-esque graffiti.
anyway, i’m a fan. just wish our worlds collided a bit more.
check out his site for more.
THE THIRD MAN Artwork by The Silver Screen Society
earlier in the week i posted some MON ONCLE designs by a collective of super-talented graphic designers who call themselves The Silver Screen Society. and prettiness ruled the land. now i’m digging back a few months into their small archives to highlight just a few of their amazing interpretations of this Carol Reed classic (the Criterion releases of which are tragically OOP). now if you’ll excuse me, i need to go rock out with my zither.
…that’s not a euphemism.
MON ONCLE Artwork By The Silver Screen Society
woooowwwws.
so it would seem as if Brandon Schaefer — of whom i’ve been a fan for quite a while — has joined forces with the likes of Trevor Bassetand Adam Hanson (of whom I’ve been a fan since i learned they joined forces with Brandon Schaefer) to form The Silver Screen Society. Their mission: to design insanely lovely and spirited tributes to their favorite films, one month at a time. Their website: ridiculous.
i really want to give them money in exchange for the privilege of owning physical versions of these things. in a related story, i really want to have the money to give them in exchange for the privilege of owning physical versions of these things. Oh well, let’s hopeo they make more Criterion-related stuff soon!
The New Cruelty
so Criterion uploaded this photo of their office, today, showing off all the new posters they’ve had made of their cover art. these things are gorgeous. these things are obvious commodities that Criterion fans / people who like pretty things would be overjoyed to own in exchange for large sums of money. these things… are not for sale.
so, so, so mean… all while the “artwork and posters” section of their online store remains pitifully thin. oy, a man can dream…
