Fake Criterion Cover: DRIVE (dir. Nicolas Winding Refn) 2011
Designed by: Midnight Marauder
so on friday i opened Criterion Corner up to reader submissions, and i was pleasantly surprised to receive some really neat stuff right off the bat! Midmarauder — one of the most prolific and consistently interesting designers of Fake Criterion Covers — sent along this sweet exclusive Drive mock-up.
if you haven’t already checked out his site, do yourself a kindness and head over there, it’s loaded with good stuff (including a bunch of other solid Drive designs).

THE 25 BEST FILMS OF 2011: A VIDEO COUNTDOWN
there are gonna be lots of “best of” lists floating around during the next few weeks — this one is mine.
please enjoy. and please watch it LOUD (and in 480p… bummer that a lot of these clips were only available in standard-def).
p.s. some of these films i included on the countdown have yet to receive a domestic release here in the U.S, but i’d rather help get people excited for something now than chide them for not seeing it a year from now. also — as with a certain film towards the very top of my list — some stories simply can’t afford to wait for us to catch up.
p.p.s. CERTIFIED COPY was ineligible, as it topped my list last year. a good thing, too, as otherwise i would never have been able to settle on a #1.
p.p.p.s. yes, there is no “22” and there are 2 “19s.” accept the mystery.
Clip: DRIVE (dir. Nicolas Winding-Refn) 2011
been out of the office all day, in part to bask in the fluorescent glory of Nicolas Winding Refn’s badass bonanza, DRIVE. i only mention it on the blog because, well… here’s my post-screening reaction:
“DRIVE: Jean-Pierre Melville for the 21st century (80s fetish included). A lean, mean, neon noir about survival gone wrong. Flawed but majorly satisfying.”
Ryan Gosling is Le Samourai Behind the Wheel, and Refn has finally arrived in a big bad way. this thing won him the best director award at Cannes, and should be a minor sensation when it hits in September. also, it’s got Albert Brooks as the reluctant heavy… what more could you want? peep the clip above (which is from the opening sequence) for an idea of the vibe, and AVOID THE TRAILER AT ALL COSTS, AS IT ESSENTIALLY BLOWS THROUGH THE ENTIRE MOVIE IN SEQUENCE with all the details and none of the pulse.
