Portrait of Luis Buñuel by Salvador Dalí
happy 112th birthday, Luis Buñuel!
(i address him directly because i happen to know that he’s a big fan of the blog. no big deal).
his good friend and collaborator Salvador Dalí painted the above portrait of Buñuel in 1924, five years before they co-created the landmark experimental short film, Un Chien Andalou. it’s a pretty little picture that manages to capture two artists before they enabled each other to realize their mutual potential — it’s readily identifiable as the work of Salvador Dalí, but also tight and limited by the confines of a vision not yet in full bloom. with that in mind, i guess it’s easy to understand why Buñuel is already looking off into the distance…
