WORLD ON A WIRE: Rough DVD Menu Shots
so today’s the day.
Criterion is finally releasing Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s mind-melting sci-fi epic World on a Wire, and this shit is major. it’s an invaluable addition to the Collection, a landmark film that time nearly forgot. naturally, it’s also one of the most beautiful packages Criterion has released in some time / ever, with rockstar designer Sam Smith absolutely killing it with the presentation. i’ve gone through the Blu-Ray a few times now (grain city, but the fuzz works), and i don’t suppose i’ll ever have reason to check out the DVD, so i can’t speak to the final menu designs on that thing, but for a good idea as to Smith’s approach to the film, take a gander at some gorgeous early mock-ups he made for the various paths of the DVD. seems he had a pretty fixed take on things from the get-go, and i’m mighty happy that he stuck with it.
This Tuesday, Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s World On A Wire will be available on DVD and Blu-ray from Criterion. Last year, Sam Smith debuted a poster for the theatrical tour of the film (available here), and Criterion decided to use the art for the cover of the release.
Over on his blog, Sam put up some early designs that he did for the menu.
